{"id":6222,"date":"2022-04-05T21:29:58","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T21:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jalboutmaysa.com\/?p=6222"},"modified":"2022-04-05T21:30:00","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T21:30:00","slug":"episode-8-the-indian-ngo-rewriting-the-global-education-playbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jalboutmaysa.com\/episode-8-the-indian-ngo-rewriting-the-global-education-playbook\/","title":{"rendered":"Episode 8 &#8211; The Indian NGO rewriting the global education playbook"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rukmini Banerji, CEO of India\u2019s Pratham Education Foundation, on balancing inputs and outcomes, engaging the community, and using data and partnerships to deliver systemic change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-10203828\"><\/div>\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/1814150\/10203828-the-indian-ngo-rewriting-the-global-education-playbook.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-10203828&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Overview<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded 25 years ago to teach out-of-school youngsters in the slums of Mumbai, Pratham&nbsp; has grown to become one of the country&#8217;s largest NGOs, delivering high quality but low-cost interventions to millions of Indian children.<br><br>It works directly with children and youth as well as through large-scale collaborations with government systems using mapping and data to help inform teaching approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pratham&#8217;s&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.asercentre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)<\/a>&nbsp;has become a key benchmarking tool for the Indian education system, while its&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/case-study\/teaching-right-level-improve-learning\" target=\"_blank\">Teaching at the Right Level (TARL),<\/a>&nbsp;programme, \u201chas led to some of the largest learning gains among rigorously evaluated education programmes\u201d, according to the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rukmini Banerji joined Pratham in 1996 and became CEO in 2015. In &nbsp;In 2021, in recognition of her contribution to the sector, Rukmini was awarded the prestigious&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropyage.org\/podcasts\/the-impact-room\/prize-philanthropy-who-are-the-real-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yidan Prize&nbsp;<\/a>for education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this episode of The Impact Room, Rukmini talks about balancing inputs with outcomes, engaging the wider community, and the importance of partnerships in delivering systemic change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBig change doesn&#8217;t happen because you drop training modules onto a context, or you create an app or you create some kind of an assessment,\u201d she says. \u201cIt happens when energised and motivated individuals put all these things together.
