{"id":6319,"date":"2023-06-22T18:45:09","date_gmt":"2023-06-22T18:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jalboutmaysa.com\/?p=6319"},"modified":"2023-06-22T18:45:11","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T18:45:11","slug":"episode-16-evolution-of-african-philanthropy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jalboutmaysa.com\/episode-16-evolution-of-african-philanthropy\/","title":{"rendered":"Episode 17 &#8211; New Money: The Evolution of African Philanthropy And Development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sarah Brown, Justin Van Fleet, Peter Laugharn, and Sabrina Habib weigh in on the global crisis in early years care and outline what philanthropy and governments can &#8211; and should be &#8211; doing to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/1814150\/12849260-new-money.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-12849260&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Overview<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgespan.org\/insights\/landscape-large-scale-giving-africa-2020\" target=\"_blank\">research by Bridgespan<\/a>, just 14 percent of large gifts by international donors get to local NGOs in Africa, and only 9 percent of large gifts by African funders are channelled to proximate organisations. The rest go to governments and international NGOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why this happens \u2013 and what it means for on-the-ground organisations, programming, and final impact \u2013 is at the heart of this episode of The Impact Room, where we take a deep dive into African development funding and the thorny topic of decolonizing aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Host Maysa Jalbout explores the barriers to funding grassroots entities in Africa and why the status quo is so hard to shift \u2013 but also hear about some new solutions designed to \u201cshift the power\u201d from donor to implementer and create more equitable partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mosun Layode<\/strong>, the executive director of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/africanpf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">African Philanthropy Forum (APF)<\/a>, which was formed in 2014 to shift the needle on development funding on the continent, kicks off the episode with a detailed landscape analysis of leading funders and innovative initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Layode, who is also a board member of Candid and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, explains that while there is no shortage of giving in Africa, the concept of strategic philanthropy remains \u201crelatively new\u201d to many indigenous donors and foundations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling for more \u201cdeliberate\u201d and \u201cmeasurable\u201d giving, Layode also makes the case for greater collaboration to amplify impact and tackle systemic issues. \u201cWe cannot continue to just to address the symptoms, like cholera and high unemployment,\u201d she says. \u201cThese are issues we\u2019ve been dealing with for so many decades, in some cases centuries, so we need a holistic approach to addressing the root causes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professor&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Bheki Moyo<\/strong>, chair and director of the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/capsi.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">CAPSI<\/a>), at Wits University Business School in Johannesburg, South Africa, is Maysa\u2019s second guest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first to coin the term \u201cshift the power\u201d &#8211; in an article he wrote in 2007 about how development was funded and managed largely by donors in the so-called Global North &#8211; Professor Bheki, calls for more collaboration between funders, iNGOs and local organisations in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not advocating for iNGOs to leave the continent. No, I&#8217;m simply asking that they co-create and collaborate,\u201d he says. He also appeals to philanthropists to do more to fund African civil society working on \u201cabstract\u201d causes, such as human rights and policy issues, rather than simply focusing on \u201cmaterialistic\u201d initiatives such as building schools or donating computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encouraged by the cross-sector collaborative responses to the Ebola crisis in West Africa and then the Covid-19 pandemic, Professor Bheki says: \u201cChange is happening, but I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s happening at the speed at which we would want it to, to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maysa\u2019s final guest is&nbsp;<strong>Degan Ali<\/strong>, the executive director of Adeso, a development and humanitarian NGO working in the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A long-time activist and leading voice in the aid localization debate, Ali has recently spearheaded the launch of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pledgeforchange2030.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pledge for Change<\/a>, calling on iNGOs to commit more equitable partnerships and authentic storytelling to create a stronger aid ecosystem based on the principles of solidarity, humility, self-determination and equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ali, who was an initiator of the Charter for Change, and a driving force behind the Network for Empowered Aid Response (NEAR), shares her views on why the current funding system for aid and development isn\u2019t working, the role for philanthropy to seed new approaches, and ways for donors to operate more equitably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Praising \u201cthe courageous path\u201d of Mackenzie Scott, who last year gifted Adeso a lump-sum of US5m with only light-touch reporting requirements, she appealed to other donors to also \u201cmake big bets\u201d, \u201ctrust the people on the ground\u201d, and give \u201cmeangingful\u201d long-term and unrestricted funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cListen to the communities and your partners and let them come with solutions that are relevant to their context,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you&#8217;re a climate change funder but your partners are saying, no, the priority is health or education, listen to them partner and be willing to step out of your comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>You could listen to all the episodes of The Impact Room <a href=\"https:\/\/jalboutmaysa.com\/podcasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the host<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maysa Jalbout<\/strong>&nbsp;is a leader in international development and philanthropy.
